Abstract
Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are both demyelinating disorders that can cause optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. Although the symptoms of both NMO and MS overlap considerably, NMO and MS have different natural histories, have different autoantibodies and respond to different drugs. Considering the fact that NMO is more common in Korean people than in Caucasians, early diagnosis and differential diagnosis of NMO from MS areparticularly important. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a mainstay for the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with MS and NMO. This articlevprovides recommendations on the use of MR imaging in MS and NMO, based on a review of the recent evidence and personal experience shared at a recent consensus meeting of neuroradiologists (Korean Society of Neuro-and Head and Neck Radiology; KSNHNR).
